How to Fit a Hydration Vest: A Step-by-Step Guide

Getting the fit right before race day prevents chafing, bouncing, and wasted energy adjusting your gear mid-run. Here's how to dial it in:

  1. Load it up first. Fill your flasks or bladder with the amount of water you'll actually carry. Add your phone, nutrition, and any gear you'd bring on a run. Fitting an empty vest gives you a false sense of how it'll sit under load.
  2. Put it on over your running top. Wear the shirt or sports bra you'll actually race in. Some fabrics create more friction than others, and you want to test with realistic layers.
  3. Adjust the sternum straps. Most Orange Mud vests have adjustable sternum straps that slide up or down on the front panel. Position them so they sit comfortably above and below the chest — not across it. The straps should be snug enough that you can't easily slide a fist under them, but loose enough that you can take a deep breath without restriction.
  4. Tighten the side cinch straps. Pull the side adjustments until the pack hugs your torso without compressing your ribs. The pack should feel like part of your body, not something sitting on top of it.
  5. Do the bounce test. Jog in place for 30 seconds, then do 10 jumping jacks. If the pack shifts more than half an inch in any direction, tighten the sternum and side straps incrementally until it locks in.
  6. Run a short test loop. Before race day, run 3-5 miles with the fully loaded vest. Pay attention to any hot spots, rubbing, or areas where the pack shifts during hills or technical terrain. Adjust before your next run.

Common Fit Issues and How to Fix Them

Vest rides up during downhills: Tighten the side cinch straps and make sure the sternum straps are secure. If the vest is still shifting, consider a smaller size — vests that are too large in the torso will always ride up under gravity.

Chafing under the arms: This usually means the shoulder straps are too wide for your frame. Adjust the sternum straps higher to pull the shoulder straps inward. Applying anti-chafe balm to the contact points also helps.
