What's a good gift for a runner? The best running gifts are the small things they use on every run but rarely buy for themselves: a soft flask or handheld bottle, a race belt, warm gloves or a beanie, a packable hat, and something that makes the drive home after a sweaty run less miserable. Under $25, think flasks, race belts, hats and seat belt covers. Under $50, think handhelds, gloves and changing towels. For a bigger gift, a hydration vest or a warm running jacket. If you're not sure, a gift card never misses.
Runners can be tricky to shop for. They already own the shoes and the watch, and they're picky about both. The good news: the stuff that actually makes running better is usually affordable, practical and easy to get right. Here are our picks by budget, plus how to get the fit right and what to do if you're cutting it close.
What do runners actually want as a gift?
Gear they'll use every single week. A few quick questions help you narrow it down without spoiling the surprise:
- How far do they usually run? Short runs call for a handheld or a belt. Long runs and trail days call for a vest.
- Road or trail? Trail runners carry more (water, a layer, a phone, snacks), so storage matters more.
- Do they drive to their runs? If they meet a group, drive to a trailhead or race on weekends, car gear is a sure thing.
- Do they run through the winter? Then warm, lightweight layers will get used all season.
Shoes and GPS watches are personal. Unless you know the exact model they want, skip them and give them gear that fits almost anyone.
What are good gifts for runners under $25?
These make great stocking stuffers, secret Santa gifts and gifts for the whole running group.
- UltraFlask 500ml (17 oz) Soft Flask, $22. A soft flask that shrinks as you drink, so it doesn't slosh. It weighs 1.4 oz, has a bite valve for one-hand drinking, and it's dishwasher safe. It's made for Orange Mud vests and packs and fits the front pockets of most running vests. One flask per listing.
- Running Race Belt, $9.95 on sale (regularly $14.95). No more safety pins through their favorite shirt. The cord and cord lock hold the bib, it carries gels (or chapstick), and it weighs 1.25 oz. One size fits all.
- Seat Belt Wrap, $22.95 (14") or $24.95 (20"). A magnetic seat belt cover that keeps a salty, chafed neck off the belt on the drive home. Hidden magnets snap it on in seconds, and it's machine washable. The 20" gives taller drivers full shoulder-to-chest coverage.
- The Squishy 2.0 Running Hat, $15.95 on sale (regularly $22.95). An ultralight, packable running hat with UPF 50+ sun protection. It folds into a pocket without losing its shape.
What are the best running gifts under $50?
This is the sweet spot: gear that solves a real problem and feels like a proper gift.
For the runner who hates carrying water: a handheld
The Running Water Bottle Handheld ($29.95) holds a 21 oz BPA-free bottle with a form-fitting strap, so they don't have to grip it hard. It has an elastic pocket for a phone or gels and a key clip. Prefer a flask? The Soft Flask Handheld ($44.95) comes with one 500 ml soft flask, has a pocket that holds a plus-size phone, and has a reflective strip for early-morning and evening runs. Not sure which they'd like? Our guide to how to carry water while running breaks down handhelds, belts and vests.
For the winter runner: gloves and a beanie
The Running Gloves ($20.95 on sale, regularly $29.95) are fleece-lined, with silicone grippers for holding bottles and gels and touchscreen-friendly fingertips. The Performance Beanie with Polartec Liner ($29.95) is water-repellent and warm without bulk, and it fits under a hood or a bike helmet.
For the runner who drives to every run: a changing towel and seat cover
The Transition Wrap Extreme ($49.95) is a private changing towel and a waterproof car seat cover in one. A sealed TPU membrane between two layers of microfiber keeps sweat, mud and lake water off the seat. It's 30" × 60", machine washable and comes with its own stuff sack. If they're not a heavy sweater or swimmer, the Transition Wrap 2.0 ($44.95) is the non-waterproof version in more colors. See the full lineup in seat covers and changing towels.
For the runner who wants their phone along: a belt
The Gearhead Running Belt starts at $49.95 for the belt alone. It weighs under 3 oz, has a zippered pocket that fits phones up to Pro Max size, and fits waists from 26" to 43". You can also get it with one 500 ml soft flask ($59.95) or two ($69.95).
What's a good gift for a runner who has everything?
Go bigger, or go with something they'd never think to buy. With the sale, these bigger gifts now start at $67.95.
- Car Kit, $67.95. A Transition Wrap Extreme plus a 20" Seat Belt Wrap, for $6.95 less than buying them separately. It covers the whole drive home after a race or a muddy trail run.
- Phone. Flask. Vest. (PFV V3.0), $69.95 on sale (regularly $99.95). A 7.3 oz minimalist vest with a 500 ml front soft flask, a phone holder that fits regular and plus-size phones, and a rear zip pocket. It's built for runs and rides under about two hours.
- Adventure Jacket, $99.95. A Polartec running jacket with thumbholes and a shoulder pocket for gels or sunglasses, made in the USA. It works as a base layer, over a T-shirt, or just for hanging out.
- Gear Vest V4.0, $114.95. For the trail or ultra runner. It's an 8.9 oz hydration vest with a 1L HydraPak bladder included, chest pockets for a phone and nutrition, and attachment points for trekking poles. If you're just getting them into trails, pair it with our guide to trail running for beginners.
Is a gift card a good gift for a runner?
Yes, especially for runners who are particular about their gear. An Orange Mud gift card comes in amounts from $10 to $500, is delivered by email and is active right away, so it's also the easy last-minute answer. Orange Mud gift cards don't expire and have no extra fees. If you'd rather hand over a physical card, contact us after you order and we'll mail one.
How do you get the size and fit right?
- Gloves: sizes S, M and L are based on hand circumference. There's a size chart on the product page.
- PFV V3.0: SM/MD fits up to a 43" chest, and L/XL fits 43" to 50".
- Adventure Jacket: unisex sizing. Their normal size fits snug over a shirt, and one size up gives a looser fit.
- Gearhead Belt: one adjustable size for 26" to 43" waists.
- Flasks, race belts, hats, wraps and seat belt covers: no sizing to worry about.
And if something isn't quite right, Orange Mud gear has a 30-day return policy, so there's time to swap.
Can you personalize a running gift?
Yes. You can add custom embroidery to Orange Mud gear: $20 for a name or text, or $45 for a logo. It makes a Transition Wrap or a gear bag feel one of a kind. Plan ahead, though. The lead time for embroidery is 2 to 4 weeks.
