How Orange Mud Began

Orange Mud was born out of frustration with uncomfortable, poorly designed hydration gear. In 2012, founder Josh created the first prototype—the HydraQuiver—by combining a gun holster, tie-down strap, and waist pack. The result was a no-bounce, easy-access solution built for real athletes, sparking the start of the brand.

Orange Mud vs Salomon Hydration Vests: Which Pack Is Right for You?

If you're shopping for a running hydration vest, chances are you've come across both Orange Mud and Salomon. Both brands make quality hydration packs for trail runners, ultrarunners, and endurance athletes — but they take fundamentally different approaches to how a pack should carry water and gear on your body. This comparison breaks down the real differences so you can choose the right pack for how you run.

Design Philosophy: High-Mount vs Traditional Vest

The biggest difference between Orange Mud and Salomon hydration vests comes down to where the pack sits on your body. Salomon's ADV SKIN series uses a traditional vest-style design that distributes weight across your chest and mid-back using their Sensifit construction. It hugs the torso with stretchy fabric and uses sternum bungees for adjustment.

Orange Mud packs use a patented high-mount shoulder design that positions the weight on your upper shoulders rather than your mid-back. This eliminates the pendulum effect that causes bounce and sway during running — especially noticeable on technical terrain, steep descents, and long efforts where fatigue changes your gait. The pack moves with your body's natural center of gravity instead of fighting against it.

Hydration Systems

Salomon's ADV SKIN vests ship with two 500ml soft flasks in the front chest pockets, with a rear bladder sleeve compatible with up to 2L reservoirs. The 2025 update removed the inner nylon liner for better airflow and faster drying.

Orange Mud offers three distinct hydration approaches: bottle-based packs (HydraQuiver series) with rear-mounted bottles you can grab without stopping, bladder packs with traditional reservoir systems, and vest packs with front-pocket bottles plus rear storage. This gives you more options to match your preferred drinking style rather than being locked into one system.

Activity Range

Salomon designs primarily for trail and ultra running. Their ADV SKIN line is optimized for that single use case with sizes from 5L to 12L.

Orange Mud designs across multiple sports — running, cycling (mountain, gravel, and road), hiking, and obstacle course racing. If you're a multi-sport athlete, one brand can outfit you for everything rather than buying from different companies for different activities.

Fit and Sizing

Salomon offers unisex and women's-specific fits across multiple sizes (XS through XL). Their stretchy Sensifit fabric accommodates a range of body types within each size.

Orange Mud packs use adjustable strap systems that accommodate a wide range of body types. The high-mount design means the critical contact point is your shoulders — one of the most consistent measurement areas across body types — which generally makes fit less finicky than chest-wrap designs.

Price Comparison

Salomon's ADV SKIN 5 retails at $145, while the ADV SKIN 12 runs $165. Orange Mud packs range from $49.95 to $170 depending on capacity and configuration, giving you options at more price points. Many Orange Mud packs include bottles or compatible accessories in the price.

Who Should Choose Salomon?

Salomon is a strong choice if you exclusively trail run and prefer a traditional vest-wrap fit. The ADV SKIN series is well-established, widely available at retail stores for in-person try-on, and carries the reputation of a major outdoor brand.

Who Should Choose Orange Mud?

Orange Mud is the better choice if you want a bounce-free high-mount design that stays locked in place on technical terrain, if you prefer bottle-based hydration over soft flasks, if you participate in multiple sports, or if you want a pack designed and assembled by a small team of athletes who use the gear they make. Orange Mud is also the better value at most price points, with packs starting under $50.
